Steam & Spirituality. The Ancient Healing Tradition of the Latvian Pirts. A Documentary by Andrea Lötscher

Ich hatte im Herbst 2025 bereits eine Reise nach Lettland / Latvia geplant. Doch dann ist meine Finanzierung weggebrochen! Ich bin dann trotzdem gefahren, die Pirts-Meisterinnen in Latvia haben mir geholfen die Reise so kostengünstig wie möglich zu halten. Ich habe weitere Interviews gedreht und zwei Pirts-Rituale. Nun habe ich die Gelegenheit im Mai und Juni weiterzudrehen. Wenn ihr mich unterstützt, kann ich weiter forschen und werde die Ergebnisse dann in Form eines Dokumentarfilmes veröffentlichen. In der Pirts (traditionelle lettische Sauna) hat eine alte europäische Heiltradition bis in die heutige Zeit überlebt. In meinem Film BALTIC HEALING gab es erste Einblicke in diese Tradition. Steam & Spirituality taucht noch tiefer ein in die Heilkunst der Pirts. Es gibt die Pirts als ein Ort, an dem Familie und Freunde zusammen kommen. Und es gibt die Pirts als ein heiliger Ort für Rituale, in dem die Menschen sich wieder mit sich selbst, der Natur und dem Kosmos verbinden können. Welche Pflanzen und Bäume werden in der Pirts verwendet? Was ist die Bedeutung der lettischen Symbole, die zurückreichen bis in die Zeit des Matriarchats? Und wie ist all das Verbunden mit der lettischen Kosmologie, den Göttinnen und Müttern, dem Jahreskreis der Sonne und den Ritualen? Ich mache mich auf die Suche nach den matriarchalen Elementen in der lettischen Heilkunde der Pirts. Es ist altes europäisches “schamanisches” Wissen. Ich hoffe, dass dieser Film auch euch inspirieren wird die Heilkunst der Frauen und unsere uralten europäischen Wurzeln wieder zu beleben.

I had already planned a trip to Latvia for the fall of 2025. But then my funding fell through! I went anyway, and the Pirts masters in Latvia helped me keep the trip as affordable as possible. I filmed additional interviews and two pirt rituals. Now I have the opportunity to continue filming in May and June. In the pirts (traditional Latvian sauna), an ancient European healing tradition has survived to the present day. My film BALTIC HEALING offered a first glimpse into this tradition. Steam & Spirituality delves even deeper into the healing art of the pirts. The pirts serves as a place where family and friends gather. And it also serves as a sacred space for rituals, where people can reconnect with themselves, nature, and the cosmos. Which plants and trees are used in the pirt? What is the meaning of the Latvian symbols that date back to the time of matriarchy? And how is all of this connected to Latvian cosmology, the goddesses and mothers, the annual cycle of the sun, and the rituals? I set out to explore the matriarchal elements in the Latvian healing traditions of the pirts. It is ancient European “shamanic” knowledge.

Verbinde dich mit deinen weiblichen Wurzeln und Ahnen!
In diesem Workshop mit Ieva Ančevska geht es um deine Ahnen- und Seelengeschichten. Ieva wird Meditationen und Übungen anleiten, die dir helfen dich mit deinen Ahninnen zu verbinden. Durch das Gruppenfeld im Seminar kannst du deine weiblichen Wurzeln kennenlernen und dich mit Mutter Erde verbinden. Die Seminararbeit umfasst Naturmeditationen, Ahnenmeditationen und therapeutische Prozesse. Sodass du deinen Körper, Geist und Seele verbindest und eine tiefe Transformation möglich werden kann.
Dr. phil Ieva Ančevska ist Ethnologin, sie hat ihre Dissertation über traditionelle lettische Heilkunde geschrieben und hat zwei Bücher über die lettische Heiltradition im Kontext alter europäischer Heilkunde verfasst. Sie schreibt Fachartikel zur Lettischen Heiltradition, gibt Seminare im In- und Ausland (u.a. an der Storl Akademie) und organisiert Studienreisen durch Lettland. Im Rahmen ihrer Forschung hat sie die meisten der alten Heilmethoden in der Praxis erprobt. Ieva ist Pirts-Meisterin, systemische Beraterin und Traumatherapeutin.

This workshop with Ieva Ančevska focuses on your ancestral and soul stories. Ieva will guide you through meditations and exercises that will help you connect with your ancestors. Through the group field in the seminar, you can get to know your female roots and connect with Mother Earth. The seminar work includes nature meditations, ancestral meditations, and therapeutic processes. This allows you to connect your body, mind, and soul, enabling a deep transformation.
Dr. phil Ieva Ančevska is a social anthropologist who wrote her dissertation on traditional Latvian medicine and has authored two books on Latvian healing traditions in the context of ancient European medicine. She writes specialist articles on Latvian healing traditions, gives seminars at home and abroad (including at the Storl Academy) and organizes study trips through Latvia. Ieva is a pirts master, systemic consultant and trauma therapist.
The workshop takes place in Dortmund and costs 240 €.

3. – 7. Juni 2026 Pirts Basics Camp in Latvia
Dies ist das erste internationale Pirts Camp, das Ilga Gavare in Latvia organisiert und leitet! In fünf Tagen werdet ihr mit allen Sinnen die Basics der Pirts (traditionelle lettische Sauna) erleben. Ihr beginnt mit einem Feuer Ritual und verbindet euch mit den Elementen. In einer Gruppen Pirts könnt ihr euch mit dem Pirts Spirit verbinden, bevor ihr in das theoretische und praktische Wissen eintaucht. Ilga wird mit euch Zweige sammeln und Pirts Wedel herstellen, sie wird über die Bedeutung der Bäume und Pflanzen sprechen. Ihr übet mit den Pirts Wedeln und dem Dampf in der Pirts zu arbeiten. Und zwischendurch werden ihr euch im Schwimmteich abkühlen…

This is the first international Pirts Camp organized and led by Ilga Gavare in Latvia! Over five days, you will experience the basics of Pirts (traditional Latvian sauna) with all your senses. You will begin with a fire ritual and connect with the elements. In a group Pirts, you can connect with the Pirts spirit before diving into theoretical and practical knowledge. Ilga will gather branches with you and make whisks, and she will talk about the significance of trees and plants. You will practice working with the whisks and the steam in the Pirts. And in between, you will cool off in the swimming pond…

8. – 11. September 2026 Retreat für Frauen in Latvia / Lettland
Das Sommer-Retreat vom 21. – 24. Juli in Latvia / Lettland ist ausgebucht!
Deswegen bietet Ilga Gavare ein zweites Retreat vom 8. – 11. September in Latvia / Lettland an:
Es wird wieder in Everti stattfinden auf dem Land von Kristine Sile. Ilga wird das Retreat leiten. Ihr werdet mit einem Feuerritual im Labyrinth beginnen, bei dem ihr euch mit den Elementen verbinden. Am ersten Abend tanzet ihr auf einem Kreis von frischem Beifuss ums Feuer und räuchert euch. Es wird eine gemeinsame Pirts geben mit anschliessender Amanita-Zeremonie. Am folgenden Tag dann individuelle Einzel-Pirts. Ihr werdet morgens im Fluss schwimmen und ganz wunderbar bekocht werden. Ihr werdet singen und tanzen und in die Stille gehen. Und wenn du möchtest, kann es eine tiefe Begegnung werden mit Dir selbst.

The summer retreat in June for women is already fully booked! That’s why Ilga Gavare is offering another retreat from September 8 to 11 2026. It will take place in Everti on Kristine Sile’s land. Ilga will lead the retreat.
You will begin with a fire ritual in the labyrinth, where you will connect with the elements. On the first evening, you will dance around the fire on a circle of fresh mugwort and burn incense. There will be a group pirts followed by an Amanita ceremony. The following day, there will be individual pirts. You will swim in the river in the morning and enjoy wonderful meals. You will sing and dance and enjoy the silence. And if you wish, it can be a profound encounter with yourself.
The retreat, including accommodation and meals, costs 700 €. We have exactly 12 places available.
